In our yard we've had to have several trees removed in order to build our house.  This was more than a few years ago but the stumps lasted for many years.  When they became ripe with moss, ferns, and wet rot they also become a heaven for insects and all forms of small animal life.  The stumps were a smorgasbord for the woodpeckers of all kinds but the pileateds  took a special liken to it.  Within a couple of seasons they completely obliterated the stump.  Fortunately I was able to get a few evidence photos to paint from before it completely disappeared.  Today, this same spot is one of my wife Coleen's flourishing flower beds.
